Water Cargo

Mask by Dr. Vanessa Johnson

Associate Professor of Applied Psychology

Inspiration

This mask is painted blue to represent the water by which captive Africans were transported to be enslaved across the world. The cowrie shells going down the forehead were once the currency of Western Africa and represent the meager price that was paid for African humanity.
